O evento, que antecede a Conferência Mundial de Juventude, agendada para o período de 31 de julho a 13 de agosto, no México, vai debater os avanços das políticas juvenis no Continente e construir uma pauta conjunta que será levada ao encontro mundial.
A pré-conferência será realizada no Hotel Pestana e o ato de abertura, às 10h de segunda-feira (24), contará com a presença do ministro da Secretaria-Geral da Presidência da República, Luiz Dulci; do secretário nacional de Juventude, Beto Cury; do governador da Bahia, Jaques Wagner; do prefeito de Salvador, João Henrique Barradas; da ministra de Juventude do México, Priscila Vera; da coordenadora do Grupo de Trabalho da ONU para Conferência da Juventude e diretora regional do Fundo de População das Nações Unidas para a América Latina (UNFPA), Marcela Suazo; do coordenador residente da ONU no Brasil, Jorge Chediek; e do secretário-geral da Organização Ibero-Americana de Juventude (OIJ), Eugênio Ravinet, entre outras autoridades.
A Conferência Mundial do México faz parte das comemorações da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU), que elegeu 2010 como o Ano Internacional da Juventude. O objetivo da entidade é estimular jovens de todo o mundo a se engajarem na conquista dos Objetivos do Milênio (ODMs), que buscam reduzir uma série de males sociais até 2015, entre eles o combate à fome, à mortalidade materna e infantil, à extrema pobreza e à falta de acesso à educação.
A pré-conferência de Salvador está sendo organizada pelo Brasil a pedido do Comitê Internacional da Conferência do México, em reconhecimento ao esforço que o país vem realizando nos últimos anos para consolidar uma política de juventude que seja capaz de assegurar plenamente os direitos dos jovens, para que estes exerçam, na prática, o papel de protagonistas nos projetos prioritários do país.
O evento está sob responsabilidade da Secretaria Nacional de Juventude, vinculada à Secretaria-Geral da Presidência da República, em parceria com o governo da Bahia, e com o apoio da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU), por meio de várias agências como a Organização das Nações para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura (Unesco); o Fundo de População das Nações Unidas (UNFPA); o Programa das Nações Unidas para o Desenvolvimento (PNUD); a Organização Internacional do Trabalho (OIT) e o Programa Conjunto das Nações Unidas sobre HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), entre outras; além do apoio de outros organismos internacionais como a Organização Ibero-Americana de Juventude (OIJ).
Até o momento 140 participantes de governo confirmaram presença, incluindo os seguintes países: Argentina, Belize, Chile, Colômbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Equador, Guiana, Haiti, Honduras, México, Panamá, Paraguai, Uruguai, além de Espanha e França, que participam do evento como observadores. A pré-conferência contará também com a participação de representantes da sociedade civil de 29 países, incluindo Canadá, Estados Unidos e países do Caribe.
